The importance of setting goals cannot be emphasized enough.  If you are going to achieve success in your network marketing business or home-based business, you must set goals.  Can you imagine setting sail across the Pacific Ocean without a goal?  No?  Why would you start a business without a goal?

The problem is, many people underestimate the importance of setting goals.  These people get into network marketing or an MLM without a clear commitment and vision.  They have a hobbyist mentality.  They are going to “give it a try” and if it doesn’t work out, oh well!  That basically is a guarantee of failure.  It really is like setting sail across the ocean without a plan or a destination in mind.

The good news is these people rarely make it out of the harbor before they get into trouble and give up, head for the bar and state emphatically, “I tried network marketing once, it didn’t work.”   Well duh!

Network marketing or MLM takes work.  It is called “work from home” for a reason.  There is work involved and there is no sense in starting without that understanding.  There is also no sense in starting with out understanding the importance of setting goals.

So what does it take to launch a network marketing or an MLM or a home-based business?

  • A Vision
  • A reason (your why)
  • An action plan
  • A list of contacts
  • A presentation
  • A follow up plan
  • Stamina and persistence

Let’s look at each one of these individually shall we?

A Vision

If you don’t know where you are going, how will you know when you get there?   I believe the most significant thing you need is a vision of what you want your life to look like in say 3 to 5 years.  Without a well thought out vision as a starting point, you will wallow around in the muck and get stuck the first time things don’t go your way.  If you want help creating a vision for yourself, check out my vision workshop.

A reason (your why)

Why do you want the vision we created in step 1?  When asked, “ why do you want to start a business”, most people answer with, “I want more money”.   That is a weak and usually not a valid answer.  It is not the money, it is the experience in life or the legacy you want to leave that propels you forward even during the tough times.  And there will be tough times, count on it, plan for it, fortify yourself against them and set sail.  Staying with my ocean crossing analogy, you would not set sail without a lifeboat, foul weather gear and a storm jib, because you know storms at sea happen.

Similarly, you should assume there will be challenges with your new business so expect them and be prepared to weather the storms when they occur.

An Action Plan

The action plan will be a wok in progress but you need a plan to get you started.  Most companies have a well thought out plan and will help you understand what to do during your first days, weeks and months in your new business.  This is a good place to begin, but as time goes on, you will want to evolve the plan for yourself.  Remember, it is your business.  Will you primarily be using social media and the internet for marketing your business or the telephone and friends and family?  These are tough decision but you will have to make them sooner or later.

Most network marketing companies will tell you to make a list of at least 200 names of people you know and start making phone calls.  Personally I don’t like this approach.  It usually results in what we call “warm market burnout”.  But it does provide a place to begin while you are getting your business started.

A presentation

When you do find someone who is willing to take a look at what you have to offer, you will need something to share with them about your product or service.  Usually this is a company supplied presentation or cd  so you don’t have to create it

A follow up plan

It is often said that the fortune is in the follow up.  You will need some sort of organized method to keep track of who you talked to, what they said and what the next steps are.  Frequently people will tell you they are not interested, but that really means not now.  Things change and staying in touch with people is critical to you long term success.  A Contact Resource Manager (CRM) is extremely helpful here.

Stamina and persistence

Last but not least, stamina and persistence are crucial.  Most people take several years of focused, consistent effort to make it big in network marketing.  Remember quitters don’t win and winners don’t quit.  It is often observed that people “fail” in network marketing because they quit before the magic happens.  Make magic!
