Are You OverThinking Too Much?
Imagine where the world would be if the Wright Brothers were still overthinking about building an airplane. How would people get from San Francisco to Petaluma if people were still overthinking about building the Golden Gate Bridge? The point is, great achievement starts with less overthinking and more action.
Now of course a certain amount of planning and preparation is necessary but, starting us fundamental to our progress and eventual success.
Too often many of us spend way too much time thinking about doing something rather than moving forward and just doing it. We usually refer to this as “overthinking”. Now certainly some thought is necessary but too much thought is counterproductive. Time to start doing. So the question is, “Are you thinking about doing something that you should be doing, want to do, need to do but are afraid to do?
Overthinking and Fear
Overthinking frequently comes from fear. Oh sure there are things like anxiety disorder but, for most of us, it’s good old fashioned fear. Fear of failure, fear of criticism, fear of success, fear of what the neighbors will think or the relatives or friends. Whatever the fear is, it is time to start taking action. “But where do I begin?”. You ask. “At the beginning”, I say. Where is the beginning? It is wherever you are at right now. That’s where you start. As you begin to travel the path, the road will unfold gradually in front of you and you will see the next step. But, only if you begin. You don’t need to see the entire path, just the next 100 yds to get started and let the journey unfold in front of you.
Overthinking is as debilitating as it is common. It can stop you from enjoying social events, disturb your sleep, undermine your job performance and even ruin your vacations. Typically, chronic overthinking also comes with all the physical discomforts of anxiety. This means that overthinking leaves you not only mentally distressed but also exhausted. If this picture sounds familiar, you’re probably desperate to work out how to stop overthinking your life and start living. However, you may have already tried to change and found it an insurmountable hurdle.
It’s important to know that learning how to overcome anxiety (and overthinking) is possible. Whether you’re trying to figure out how to stop overthinking in a relationship, how to stop obsessive thinking about your health or how to enjoy socializing without panicking, there are powerful techniques you can learn.
Let’s go for a drive
Imagine driving from say San Diego to New York. You can think about it all day but unless you get in the car and start driving, you can never get there. You might plan by getting maps or a GPS. You might make some initial decisions like what route to take. Should I start out in I 8 or I 5. Should my major cross country route by I 66 or I 80. All these are good things to plan ahead.
But the stark reality is, it does not matter in the final analysis which route you take . They all lead to the same place. What matters most is that you quit thinking and start driving.
You can never see the entire route. You can never accurately predict all the variables such as potholes construction delays, and weather. You just have to start and then make adjustments as you progress.
So it is with all of life. No matter whether it is a romantic relationship, a new business, a vacation or any new endeavor. You just gotta start. Where do you start?
